Statement about Shooting at Portland International Airport
9/27/19

This information is preliminary, as there is an on-going investigation into the incident.

A little after 5 a.m. this morning a Port of Portland Police Officer contacted an adult male in the airport’s bag claim.

During that contact, the suspect produced a firearm and a struggle ensued.

During the struggle, a shot was fired by the involved suspect. The officer did not fire his firearm.

The suspect sustained a non-life threatening injury and was treated by medical personnel and transported to a local hospital.

The officer sustained a minor injury, not as a result of a gunshot.

The East County Major Crimes Team is investigating this incident in coordination with the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office. The firearm believed to be involved has been recovered.

The airport is open and operational; no flights were or are impacted by this incident.

Currently, the lower roadway is closed to private vehicles; ride-share, taxis, and shuttle buses are still able to access the lower road.

A portion of the baggage claim area is currently closed so the investigators can gather evidence. Arriving travelers can collect baggage at the open carousels. Staff is on hand to direct travelers accordingly.

(NOTE: At 2 p.m. PT, the lower roadway was re-opened and all airport operations returned to normal)

There is no risk to the public as a result of this incident.

Anyone with information related to this incident should contact the Port of Portland Police at 503-460-4747.

We don’t anticipate having more information for release until the suspect is booked.
